I am installing hardfloors in between rooms. Unfortunately I didn't take into consideration the amount of transition molding I would need. Not to mention I didn't realize how expensive the moldings are.

What is the cheapest and best way to go from carpet to hardfloor?

Also my carpet is a lot higher then the hardfloor now, how do I do the transition? I don't understand how the carpet will stay against the molding and not lift up.

Would appreciate some help.

There are standard molding you can buy at the home improvement stores. They are tapered on one side and have a groove on the other for the higher surface. The can be made of wood or extruded aluminum. It does not get cheaper than that.

Carpet bar is one method... you can buy it at most building supply or carpet stores.... gold or silver tone usually. It comes in 12 ft lengths, and you can cut it with snips. Once the carpet is tucked in, just tap it down with a block and hammer to grip the carpet.

Another option is to simply fold the carpet under itself and tack it down.

Since your carpet is already down, and you need to make the transition.. you may need to trim the carpet pad back just a bit, to use either method.
