I don't think the malls provide the right kind of fun for my nephews and nieces, so I'm looking for ideas on where I can take them on weekends - either for just a day trip or overnight. The kids are 2-9 years old.

Tagaytay would be perfect, especially if it is on an overnight trip. Why? Because then they will feel the cold weather especially at night. They will be excited to bring their sweaters and wear them as late afternoon or night sets in. If you stay in a place where there is open space, they will enjoy a good walk at night when it is cold.

If budget is not a problem, Taal Vista would have a nice grassy area where they can walk at night. (Not to say that during the day, they can watch the magnificence of the Taal Lake and Volcano)

There are cheaper inns and hotels where you can do the same. You just have to get to Tagaytay early enough to scout for a place that you feel is appropriate.

During the day, the kids can ride horses at Picnic Grove. You can have a picnic lunch - - - there are tables for rent. You can also bring the kids to the Peoples' Park. It used to be called Palace in the Sky. That would be a bit of recent history for the bagets, as well.

You can bring them to the zoo at Residence Inn. They will have a chance to see Simba, live.

And of course, the kiddie restaurants are there, too. Jollibee and McDo are both in Tagaytay. So you can enjoy your maliputo or tawilis in local restaurants without having to force these adult food on the kids.

How about Serendra at The Fort? Bonifacio High Street is great for kids who want to run around, play ball, ride their bikes, rollerblade, you can even have a mini-picnic. The ambiance is really good and family-friendly. There are guards roaming 24/7 so it's very safe. There is also a Timezone shop where your kids can play games. Since majority of the space is outdoor, go during late afternoon or evening when the weather is cooler. Good luck!

Bring them to the National Museum, its free on Sundays. Go to the Island Cove in Kawit, Cavite and fish for your lunch. Afterwards go to their swimming pool. Towards the late afternoon, you can rent the bikes at their eco farm and look at the crocodiles, ostriches, etc. Bring a yaya so when they are at the pool you can work out at their gym or hop on the treadmill. They have rooms big enough for a whole family so you can sleep overnight if you want.

In Manila, La Mesa Watershed...In Laguna, you may try the pansol resorts. In cavite, you may want to try Tagaytay, many affordable hotels and you can visit Paradizoo, HoneyBee Farm, Sonya's. In Batangas, you can always try the beaches of San Juan, or the dive resorts of Anilao. Goodluck.

as a suggestion, you can all make a dessert and since you'll be the adult, you can guide them. bake cookies, make pancakes, make spaghetti. i promise, it'll be a lot of fun. it always works for my nieces and nephews. can't cook? enroll them to a 1-day kid's cooking class.

do you have access to a pool? you guys can have a swimming party and play volleyball or tag in the pool.

really need to go out? try museo pambata. although i doubt the 2-yr old will be interested.

you can introduce them to bowling or to other sports, even for just that day, who knows you might just discover your nieces' or nephews' passion for it.

Try Manila Zoo then troop over to Luneta and to the Philippine Museum. You can explain our cultural heritage along the way. Well-informed kids will morph to better informed adults =)
