that cant do anything but read a code on the computer? Why do so many people think that just reading/scanning a code will fix everything?

well first of all, i wonder why you associate with people who go to Auto Zone lol. at least they can tell you what codes are stored for free. but seriously, most of the people there have no training and i have used some of their parts and i have not been happy with their reliablity. It is what it is: the cheap go to place for the stade-tree mechanic that uses a 'bigger hammer' to fix it.

Because some of us are not stupid and are capable of fixing a vehicle, but we cannot, however, touch the computer and just "know" whats codes are stored in it, so we go to the nice people at Auto Zone and have then hook their scanner up to it and tell us what is giving a code, and what codes have been stored. Then, we take our DMM (Don't worry, I don't expect you to know what that is) and begin our work now that we know where a problem is radiating from.

Why do so many people think that because they can ask a question on Y!A? and "act" like they know something, that it in any way means, that they actually know anything.....at all.

because it cheaper than going to mechanic and they can scan to your car computer and tell you what the problem is and you can than buy it there . so it cheaper for a better price and let me tell you that most of the mechanic order their part from Auto Zone so when the mechanic do that they can round you up to what ever money they want to get from you so i know you don't like or seem to like going to auto zone and get your car diagnosed by somebody who get paid $8 an hour but now all people are rich and weight because 7 of 10 people are poor and they can afford to lose money.

first of all, many of them earn more than that and why does the rate of pay seem to equal "dont know sh*t"..... you'd be surprised what some people earn..
most of them are somewhat trained in car related things....
the test things are free (battery check, dash indicator check, etc) and that way you can save time and money going to a mechanic if you can find out what if anything needs to be fixed....

personally i have went to auto zone a few times as well as my friend who has fixed my car many times usually when he was stumped on something. I know i have saved myself a trip to the mechanic with simple little things i could do myself just by walking in and saying (for example.. this happend a couple weeks ago)... my blinkers didnt work so i thought it was a fuse or maybe a short in a wire, so i went in to look for some fuses and ask them if there was like a seperate fuse or something (since my car has fuses in 3 diff spots) and before i bought the fuses a guy there told me about another thing it may be.. a plug looking thing- some sort of relay fuse thingy (dunno what its called) that is under the steering column..... i had no clue about such a thing, but for 5 bucks and 1 hr of me and my freind tearing apart the underneath of my stearing column, we found the part, replaced it and the blinkers worked... so soemtimes they actually DO know what they are talking about

Because some of us earn less than $8/hour and have no choice but to go to those auto repair places.

Because its "free". We are Americans. We don't feel we should have to pay for anything.

Why do you think not a single day goes by here where someone doesn't ask "where can I get a free shop manual or wiring diagrams for my car?"

thats all most mechanics are these days- someone who can look up a code and replace a part. id rather take a vehicle to autozone to get it read for free than to take it to a mechanic to read for 50 dollars.
