You can't get pregnant if you're not ovulating. The problem is, even with a "predictor kit," you can't be completely sure when you're ovulating. And sperm can stay inside and alive for 72 hours, so even if you had not ovulated yet when you acquired the little swimmers, you can get pregnant after the fact.
Predicting ovulation is a poor form of birth control, but can be useful when you're trying to conceive.

You cant get pregnant if your not ovulating. But dont assume that having unprotected sex just before or after a period will stop you getting pregnant. You dont know when your bodies ovulating especially if periods are irregular. Also sperm can live inside you for several days so even if your not ovulating at the time of sex you can still get pregnant.
Be safe rather than sorry and if you dont want a baby either dont have sex or use reliable contraception.

You have to ovulate to get pregnant. However, if you are about to ovulate, it's possible to get pregnant because sperm can live inside you for a few days under the right conditions. For example, if you have sex Monday and ovulate Thursday, it's possible to get pregnant Thursday if you have fertile cervical fluid that has kept that sperm alive since Monday.
But, bottom line, if you don't ovulate, you won't get pregnant.
