So this month and last month my period was only 2 days long and very light. I got it this month...very very light for 2 days..then a week went by of nothing..then BAM...light bleeding again. My regular cycles are about 1 week long and very heavy. I am not on birth control. Then it got a little heavier but nothing extreme....I have noticed on my tampons that the blood is extremley dark like almost black. I am not pregnant, the dr took a blood and urine test 2 weeks ago. What could be going on?

My periods will get off schedule like this sometimes, and then corrects on its own. The dark blood could be due to stagnation like Otis mentioned. That means that since you have had a light flow a couple of times all the blood that should've come out didn't. When it remains inside, it goes dark. I have experienced that before. If your period doesn't straighten itself out by next month, you should probably see your gynecologist for a check-up. I don't know that blood and urine tests reveal much about periods. A blood test will tell you if you are low on iron, though.

I have heavy periods sometimes too and they can be painful at least for me. Since you have really dark blood you may be having clots that break up as they go thru the cervix and are coming out like that. It shouldnt be a health concern if you told the dr and they didnt say anything. If you fill a pad/tampon in less than an hour however or have alot of pain, call your dr right away. It is good though that its not bright red and coming out fast. thats when you may want to worry and also contact dr right away.

In my opinion it is nothing bad. I applaud you because you actually went to the doctor unlike most of the people on this site.

If the blood is very dark, almost purple / brown color it is probably just stagnation happening. It is not harmless, but you should change tampons often if it is really heavy and stagnated like that to avoid toxic shock.

Also when you see your doctor to get the test result back ask her about Dysmenorrhea.

I apologize that this is comming from a male, but I am in the medical field so I figured I'd toss out my opinion. :)

The dark almost black blood comes from a high Iron content in your system. Have you noticed a metalic smell to it also? This happens to my ex all the time with the almost black blood, it is normal.
