I live on the border and have traveled all over Mexico. It is a bueatiful but dangerous country. I traveled witht he local college a lot and we had a history, geology, and a spanish professor to point out the best of our travels as well as a travel guide to get us through some of the harder places. We saw places in the mountains above the clouds-Real de Catorce & Rancho del Cielo, black sand beaches-somewhere on the coast, volcanic caulderas with blue, blue water-Catemaco- all were so beautiful, fantastic ruins Pelenque & lots of others -we found some ruins that were untouched and overgrown and bought our way in. Off in the distance you could see the steps going up the mountain. From the top, you could still see the pits, once filled with water where the maidens were thrown-, cosmopolitan cities-we sat in the old bull ring at Zacatecas and the Gran Cafe in Vera Cruz but mostly it was lots of unrelenting poverty. Some places are much safer than others but there are travel advisories and they are kidnapping people for just dollars now and they are vicious. Be very careful if you decide to travel and are Anglo. Our travel advice was always venture out from the group in fours, two to stay if trouble and two to go for help. Give you an idea about safety. . .and it's hard to figure out which police to go to for help . . .The safest place was San Miguel de Allende and the most fun was San Cristobal. I think San Cristobal had the best looking men I have ever seen and the best music and entertainment, just don't buy the amber.

I drove to Rocky Point one day. AKA Puerto Penasco. Does that count? I wasn't very impressed. I didn't even spend the night. They don't have Comfort Inns and Best Westerns down there... at least none that I could find. All I found was a sketchy motel downtown that didn't offer any parking. I went back home the same day. You can buy prescription medication without a prescription though.
I'd like to visit deep Mexico some time, and see the "real" Mexico.

In 1981, we took a cruise for our honeymoon, and Cozumel was one of the stops. We had planned to go see some Aztec ruins at Tulum, but there was a summit going on at Cancun...Reagan, Thatcher and I don't remember who else was there, so the excursion was cancelled.
Instead, we ended up walking into a travel agency in San Miguel and taking an all day bus tour of the island. It cost us $9 U.S. each, and lasted about seven hours.
The bus was an old school bus. There were about two dozen people, and besides the guide, my new bride and I were the only people who spoke English. But the guide was very nice, and the other locals were extremely friendly, even though we communicated only with gestures and very limited pidgin English. We stopped a couple place to do some snorkelling, and also a several other beaches, one of which offered parasailing (we declined), one which had some very cool caves and rock formations, and one which produced some very big waves, one of which depantsed me.
All in all, we had a blast.

Yes, I have been and I loved meeting the people and experiencing their culture in their natural environment. I love to visit foreign countries and get off of the beaten path to meet the locals. You really learn a lot and I always keep a journal of my adventures.
You should try it, but for safety reasons, if you leave the tourist areas, always go in groups, and someone in the group needs to speak the language.
