At r = 1, the dots form a tight line, low on the left, high on the right. At r = 0, the dots are all over the place, no hint of a line. At r = 0.5, the dots form a wide fuzzy band that goes from lower left to upper right. At r = 0.787, the fuzzy band is much less wide. Ever see a picture out of focus? The r value is like the sharpness of the focus, closer to 1, closer to a tight line; but closer to 0, closer to blurred beyond recognition. Negative values of r run the band of dots upper left to lower right, again with close to 0 blurred, close to -1 a tight thin band.
