I have an open concept living/dining room with openings into the kitchen and hall. We are not doing crown molding into the kitchen or hallway and I can't figure out how to finish it off at the very edge of the room nicely. How do you cut the very last piece if it doesn't continue any farther?

You finish it into itself. 90 degree bend into the wall with a 45 degree cut. at the corner of the wall.
Not complicated, but effective.

The long point (top edge) should extend to the edge/corner of the room, and should be cut at 45 degrees. Now cut a 45 degree return miter. (Return miter is just like an outside corner 45, but the piece cut is just long enough to extend from the miter to a stock or 'butt' end back to the wall. These small pieces can be cut from 'scrap' but do not try to cut from small pieces. Always cut from stock long enough to stay safely away from the blade.

This is hard to explain without drawing a picture, but I'll do my best...

Imagine what the joint would look like if you DID go around the corner. You'd cut the pieces at a 45 degree angle, and they'd match up. Now...

You don't want it to wrap around though. Cut the piece that would wrap around the wall so it's very short...almost like it is wrapping around a corner, but instead of going around an actual corner, it just turns the corner and dead ends at the wall. It will still have the 45 degree cut to match the joint, but it will be very short.

Make this "dummy corner" stop just before the actual corner.

I hope that was understandable.

get a miter box and cut the inside at the proper angle.
