Ok, so I'm not sure how it works outside the US, or indeed in other US states, but here in Wisconsin, bars have to close at 2 am, 2:30 am on weekends, except for New Year's. I'm not sure the exact reason this law exists. Drunk Drivers? Noise disruption? Religious doubletalk? Antiquated carryover from prohibition? Thanks in advance.

I have been in the business for many years, so here is my best explanation; State to state laws are made as far as when a bar has to close for business and that means every one is to be out the door by that time. There is no gray area in the state I'm from. We close at 2am and that means everybody out. No Questions Asked.. I have however been to clubs that give last call right up to the minute of closing and let the customers drink their last drink. For those of us in red-necks-ville (speaking of the law not the customers) you have to have your customers out the door by 2am. The reason we have a "last call" at 1:45, is to let the people know they can order one more drink and have it done by 2 and be gone. This isn't to make people mad, it's to let them have time to finish their drink and not make it look like we sold it just to get the last dollar out of their pocket and shove them out the door with a full glass left in the bar. We also have an open container law here that won't allow drinks to be taken outside our property. On the patio deck is fine, but if they go off the property.....busted. Hope this helps.

Last call gives you advance notice, so you don't get caught with a full drink at 1:59am. (OK, 2:29 am on weekends)

Last call is not a legal requirement, it is just a courtesy the bar gives you. The law does not state a specific time to stop selling alcohol, it just states all patrons must be out, and the doors locked at closing time.

Last call is required since businesses are regulated. Thus, the government must see to it that all bars must be closed at a certain time.

Because no one listens to ''Next-to-last call''....:-)

for the same reason that most bar clocks run fast; to give the staff time to remove the evidence that might get them in legal trouble - serving drinks after hours.

probably an old blue law holdover.

"Last call" means that by law, they have to stop selling alcohol by a certain time, so they are giving the customers one last chance to order.
