The West to me, would mean European countries. (nowadays this term also inculdes the USA)
In ancient China, the chinese used to refer to Europeans as "Xi Fang Ren". Loosely translated, means people from the West.
And geographically, Europe (and the Americas) are situated to the West of the Atlas, which checks up with how the Chinese addressed the europeans.
