Dark doesn't actually exist. It is only an absence of light.

Because of all the morons. Morons (sometimes erronously referred to as "dark particles") are a type of light-absorbing boson. When a photon colides with a moron, they are both anihilated and release a pion and a Higgs boson. The Higgs bosons displace space, which is why you can't find things in the dark. The world is full of morons (but science hasn't yet figured out where they all come from) and when the sun isn't shining directly on them, the morons quickly use up the available energy resources, making the world a sad, dark place.

"Darkness" is technically just a word created to shorten "the absence of light." So, darkness is dark because there is no light there to permeate the darkness so as a result, you can't see anything, thus causing it to be dark.
