Fist of all, I'm a Chinese, and I do think my motherland is a strange country.
1.China is famous for strict censorship, but my dad bought pirate erotica without any problems, he even asks for my opinion and watch them in front of me....no cops care about.
2. I have a satellite receiver, no cops care about.
3. China's mainstream websites are full of X rated stuff, no cops care about.
4. Farmers wear Armani suits while doing field work.
5. Internet are full of japan-haters, but off the internet, all of them eat sushi and watch Japanese manga and TV shows and join manga cosplay.
6. I went to western China and feels like it's some Middle-east country.
all in all, I'm not sure what China is.

to tell the truth, I'm not optimistic about my motherland....who knows what she'll become 50 years later.....
and I hate my dad watching erotica in front of me, it's highly private thing...

I forgot to add another: any American TV show can be downloaded and added transcripts in 24 hours after they're aired in America.....of course you'll never see most of them on TV

I don't have time to go into a lot about china, as I have to leave for work pretty quick.
I'm an ex pat from the USA that lives in the heart of China.
But:
Yes I can buy pornography, but it doesn't interest me. I'd rather do it then watch it.
Yes, China censors, its mostly about China hate sites and pornography. I understand the former, but don't support it, and I think the later is silly since pornography is petty common here.
I believe China is headed for greatness and in the next 25 years it will be the bellwether that the rest of the world aspires to be like. Including the USA, because by China's example, the USA will realize the errors it made to let itself go downhill.
Do I think China is a strange country? No, I think it is different.
For a bit more enlightment, visit my web site

Quite a few photo's of my adopted home and my former one.
I am not an American hater, I am a true patriot who believes that the USA has become its own worst enemy. If you wondering why, look at my profile and find answers to my China and economic questions.
Gotta run!!
Peace
Jim

Pornography is everywhere. The fact that your father watches it in front of you is seriously sick. It is a form of non-contact sexual / emotional abuse.
I am sure that your father's actions are not typical of most people in China. It is a problem with him.
The government of China allows pornography because there's big money to be made with it. They don't really care so much about it. If the men are busy watching pornography, they won't be spending their time thinking about political issues.
If there is some political question, just watch how quickly they respond to it!!!!
They have a highly effective filtering system controlling the internet from political questions such as Independence for Tibet, Shinjiang, Taiwan etc.
The Japan hating is constantly being stirred up by the government.
China has a systematic control over truth in their society.
When you control the education system and information for an entire society, you can create a new reality that overrides the actual reality.
The most terrifying aspect in any tyranny is not the brute force, nor its callous perpetrator, it is the mind that attempts to rationalise and justify it intellectually. You see, deny it or not, the old cliché holds true: knowledge is power - and it is a power far beyond the missile or bayonet. Once you've infiltrated someone's mind, someone's power of rationalisation - any killing can be justified.
Just look at how the Americans justify their actions in Iraq!

Do you honestly think that the western diet wouldn't seem just as alien to those people ? remember, there have been times in the turbulent histories of those countries when any small amount of anything edible was very welcome, because there was mass famine and starvation This gives people a totally different attitude towards food culture You seem a bit short of knowledge and your ignorance is showing....

All countries have there contradictions. China is the most populous nation on earth and the oldest continuously existing civilization. So I can see how they might have picked up a few quirks.

I hope you're not still in China or you're going to get a knock on your door soon. Not because of the porn, but the anti-government attitude.

I have had the pleasure of getting to know a few Chinese 'workers' - their word for themselves - while they were here on business and will never forget how each of them appeared so incredibly sad upon having to go back home.
You left out:
Horrible customer service.
Lack of open smiling and friendliness.
All the luxuries that we here in the US consider commonplace.
Having to deal with businesses that have no incentive to be competitive.
These were the things my friends stated they would miss so much.
