The difference between the two is very slight. It would make no difference to anyone who would be interviewing you or for grad school. They would put both schools in the same camp. For every person who would say SB, there is probably a person that would say SD.
What you should consider when looking at two schools of similar reputation is the ancillary items related to the college or university. Do you want to be in a bigger city? SD is not the small beach town that it used to be. Do you need to be next to Mexico. That is a good and bad thing. Santa Barbara is a pretty cool place. SB, as a town, is referred to as "The Queen of the West Coast".
Remember, you are going to be calling this home for the next 4 years, maybe more.
Lastly, where do you live now? If you live in SD and you want to stay close because you love your family so much, or whatever, then SD is perfect. However, if you want to get away from the area perhaps SB is better. This obvious works in reverse as well.
Truly, there is not enough of a difference between the two programs to merit one over the other.
I wrestled with the same question back when I was choosing a college. My heart wanted the one that some, not all, would have considered to be slightly less impressive. My head said to pick the very best. Truth be know, there wasn't really enough of a difference between the two to have used academics alone as a deciding factor. In hind sight, I know, for sure, that I made the wrong choice. I chose based on perceived reputation.
It's like arguing over who makes a better bottle of water. Or which cell phone provider is best. They all have issues and they are all just fine.
Two years after you graduate no one will care what school, of the two, you attended. You are not talking about Stanford and Cal State Bakersfield. These two are too similar with academics. Look at the rest of the big picture.
PS: I am a teacher and could live anywhere...I live in Santa Barbara.
Best wishes and follow your heart on this one.
Mike

what's your major? Do you want to be in a town that has a sports team for your university? They are both good schools. They both have their party scene, but Santa Barbara I think is a little bit smaller than San Diego. Only you can decide where you will be happy once you go off to college so you should probably check out their websites and see what they have to offer or find some brochures at school, the career center, counseling office or the transfer center at the local junior college maybe?

Depends what you want to study...but, UC San Diego is a much better school, especially in the science department...US Santa Barbara is considered a "party" University. If you are serious about your education, I am sure you will do well in either school...my vote: San Diego.

In general, UC Santa Barbara is better for the social sciences and humanities, and San Diego is better for the physical sciences. If you plan to major in psychology (I assume that's what you meant), your choice might depend on whether you are looking at a more clinical approach to psychology (Santa Barbara) or a more physiological approach (San Diego).

It depends on your major. For example, if you want to study Chemistry, the Department of Chemistry at UC San Diego is one of the best in California.

to put it simply (and probably stereotypically):
uc san diego = science school
uc santa barbara = party school near the beach

UCSB= Isolated, on the beach. Known for being lively, frats, parties, and liberal arts.
UCSD= Near downtown SD, you can see the ocean from some high-rise dorms in the Muir school. Known for being really quiet, inactive, Engineering, sciences.
