Depends how long you have been together, property involved, children of the relationship. If you have been together with someone and have not accumulated much or had any children in the relationship you can absolve it without any legal involvement. I have been "common-law" for 22 years and live in Texas, but I have property which bears "both" our names so divorce would have to happen if we split apart. Divorce is a legal requirement by law in cases of marriage or relationships which have bonding circumstances of responsibility such as I stated. Property or children.

Yes....You must get a divorce. Is your last name on your social security card the same as your common law husband??
Then as i understand it you must get a divorce. Ohio is a "common law state" and i know a couple who had to get a divorce although they were never legally married.
I use to live in Texas.
