I would exchange colors for textures... red could be velvet, yellow satin, green cotton, blue terry cloth... you see? Draped like a ribbon across the sky!

The same way Beethoven described the moonlight to a blind person in "Moonlight Sonata". With a song, filled with a variety of different chords and notes.

Get someone else to describe what colours are and then It should be easy to describe the rainbow.. Its just an arch of colours that are made by the rain splitting the light or something.. I think thats what the science teacher told us..

The colors I would relate to temperatures.....so examples:
The reds are hot-place their hand out into the sun
Greens are cool-let them feel the coolness of grass
blue is cold-let cool water drip over their fingers

and the shape : I would take their hand and wave it back and forth in the shape of a rainbow and tell what color(temp) it is as we move along it.
