A core 2 Duo mean simply it has two processing centers as compared to the one of the Pentium 4. A quad however is like doubling down. It the same speed and power but can operate on more things at a time (kinda like working 4 people 5 hours a day as opposed to 2 people 10 hours a day)

Core 2 is equivalent to Pentium 4. It's a model name.

Duo/dual means that it has two 'cores' on one chip. It basically means that it has two brains.

Quad has four brains, but most programs don't even see the other two, or sometimes more than the first.

Quad will be great once programs can effectively utilize all of the 'brains'. Right now, it's more like an added insurance in case that happens in the near future.

Unless you're a PC enthusiast who wants the latest and the greatest, dual core (core 2 duo) would be your best choice.
