If we all agreed, no one's view would be obstructed and we could sit comfortably, eat our snacks, and enjoy the concert. There has always got to be some person who decides they want a slightly higher, but no less closer, view of things--thereby setting off a chain reaction that forces everyone to stand up and thrash around to the music.
Some of us just want to sit down and enjoy ourselves like if we were listening to a really loud radio at home!

What if I clap my hands along to the beat from my seat, is that not enough "energy"?

NO! I must jump up and down and shriek and block your view and foam at the mouth and tear my clothes and pass out all over you.

Amen!
Just last night I saw Annie Lennox. She kicked off her new tour here in San Diego. [Great show, by the way.] I hadn't been to a large-venue concert in many years, but I remembered what went on. So I got tickets seats in the side loges -- just two seats per row, and heavily angled toward the stage. The people down on the main floor were jumping around like rabid dogs, while those of us upstairs were free to just sit there and soak up the music.
All was going well until the two Lesbians in front of us had their five glasses of wine kick in and started jumping up and down and grabbing each other's butts. [No, I'm not a homophobe; I'm gay. But OY there's nothing worse than rowdy drunk Lesbians!] When they spilled their wine on the people in front of them, they quickly sat down in embarrassment.
Anyway, the previous concert I saw was Bette Midler about three years ago, and I paid top dollar for front row seats in the side elevated section [in a sports arena] just so no one would block my view.
On a related note, I get annoyed at theatre performances by the new trend in awarding standing ovations to everything. If someone wanders onstage and remains vertical for a few minutes, that's deemed worthy of a standing ovation nowadays. I adamantly refuse to stand unless the performance has been truly extraordinary, so I now make sure I get front row seats [upstairs in the Mezzanine].

Cos it is no fun sitting down and watching a concert.. if you want to sit and enjoy loud music... go listen to a live band in a bar.. there you have both options.. I have never been to a concert where folks were sitting down...

I agree. I was listening to a live Who song and that made Pete Townshend pissed. He told the audience to either sit down or stand up and shut up.

i think this depends greatly on the type of music being played at the concert. sometimes it's part of the experience to thrash about. but sometimes people are just ridiculous...

If someone is sitting down at my concert,
I get very angry!
It's about the energy, if you wanna sit,
Go see a soft band.

Well tell me something new when is that we so called human`s have ever behaved rationally. We call ourselves civilized yet we behave most of time worse than animals towards each other. At least animals fight to keep their territory, but we humans fight for hell of it.
