I'm trying to remember which movie had a creepy old guy who walks to the front door of a house while whistling. Can anybody help me?

It's reverend Kane and he is in poltergeist 2 and 3..
he was played by Julian Beck

No.. actually, Julian Beck was Kane in the 2nd one and a guy named Nathan Davis played him in number 3.. (wow..makeup can do wonders .. he looks almost just like Beck.. ) That means that Beck died between the 2nd and 3rd movie.. .. I was not aware of that.. the original whistling scene in front of the house was definately number 2 though.. (the third one takes place in a New York high rise.. no house)

Julian Beck was dying when he did "Poltergeist II", which is why it is so eerie when he talks about death and dying. Death has connections to "Poltergeist" so much that people have considered it a curse:
"Poltergeist"~Dominique Dunne, who played the teenage daughter, died following completion of filming. She had just begun shooting on "V", the TV miniseries, when her death occurred.
"Poltergeist II: The Other Side"~Julian Beck died of cancer at the age of 60 in 1985 before the film's release in 1986. Also, Will Sampson died a year later following open heart surgery, if I recall correctly.
"Poltergeist III"~Heather O'Rourke died following filming though there has been debate about refilming some scenes.
I guess I don't remembering him whistling. I recall Beck singing though. Of course, it's been awhile since I've seen the film.

was it an old movie? there's a great old movie called "M" German movie, stars peter Lorre, directed fritz Lang, sounds the same, whistles as he goes around town killing kids, he wears a hat and if you'd ever seen peter, he's not a looker in the classic sense

more to the point . . .Poltergeist 3 . . .the old guy isnt in the first two, if its the same movie you're talking about.
He resembles the guy on the cover of Anthrax's Among the Living CD.
