Write, write, write,...
Click, click, click,...
Practice, practice, practice...

Do something meaningful and avoid working for the major media outlets who will not cover the most important stories that conflict with the interests of the power brokers. The Internet is providing new outlets for creative and original work and it is constantly changing. The world is full of mediocre talent re-writing press releases from government sources. These are boring people and their work adds little benefit to mankind.

Look for local new and write in-depth articles. There is a market for fresh, truthful, and original perspectives that the mass media is fearful of covering. Your stories may be published in electronic format rather than print.

Develop real skill and be truthful. People are starving for the truth.

You have two distinct areas of study ahead of you -- but, the blending of the two into the THING that you want to do IS the thing -- but, only once you have a solid base in each to work with !!
Write as much as possible -- on any and all subjects that appeal to you --- learn the art of the written word -- study into the journalistic artforms ---And, regardless of your age or academic background -- submit your written stories and views every chance you get -- to every single publication that you can get in contact with !!
And, in order to become well acquainted with and proficient in photography --- you will need to study that artform as well -- read as much as you can about it --- what goes into making a simple picture into a real impact image !! Learn to work with all types of lighting and how to "set a mood" with a photo !!
And, since you are taking this art toward the "News" and "Information" category ---- do your best to start "covering" the "breaking events" that you can WHILE your learning --- shoot, shoot. and then shoot some more -- practice does make perfect with THIS particular art !!!

You might consider a journalistic degree as a major in your college studies ---- and, unless you are thinking of a career later that centers AROUND the photography thing --- THAT can be a secondary field of study ---- BUT, the journalistic thing will be THE ticket that opens up the opportunities for you to work in BOTH arenas in the "blended" art that you want to work at !!!

From a pro photographer, with many years in the field behind him ---- Much luck in your pursuits ---- here's hoping that one day down the road --- we are all enjoying your efforts on a weekly basis ----- while YOU are hard at work --- keeping us all informed and knowledgable !!!!!!!!
