Here's a haiku for you:

First you take a seat
Then the wheel goes round and round
You can touch the sky
At the top the view is great
Time to disembark!

The ferris wheel is a ride found at carnivals. Carnies are specially trained ride technitions who press buttons to slow the ferris wheel for people to get on and speed it up once everyone is on. It is a large upright wheel that takes the riders in a rotation up towards the sky and back to the ground. The ferris wheel is not a fast moving ride, but is more enjoyed for its exhillerating views. Now ferris wheels are run by electricity, but prior to that they functioned by steam engines.

It is a large metal wheel with individual cars suspended from the outer edges; it is mechanized and turns slowly due to its size. It rotates so all cars have time to enjoy the view at the top of the wheel.

This is interesting and the size of this first wheel, designed and created by Ferris, is amazing.

The Ferris wheel is named after Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute graduate George Washington Gale Ferris, Jr., who designed a 264 foot (80 meter) wheel for the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois in 1893. It was designed as a rival to the Eiffel Tower, the centerpiece of the 1889 Paris exhibition. This first wheel could carry 2,160 persons at a time; The Ferris wheel was the largest attraction at the Columbian Exposition standing over 250' tall and powered by two 1000 HP steam engines. There were 36 cars each the size of a school bus that accommodated 60 people each (20 seated, 40 standing). It took 20 minutes for the wheel to make two revolutions - the first to make six stops to allow passengers to exit and enter; the 2nd a single non-stop revolution - and for that, the ticket holder paid 50 cents. The wheel was moved twice after the 1893 Fair and was eventually destroyed (by controlled demolition) in 1904 after it was used at the St. Louis exposition of that year. At 70 tons, its axle was the largest steel forging of the time. It was 26 stories tall, only a quarter of the Eiffel Tower's height.[1

They are big, round, and somewhat frightening.
The quickly assembled ones in the carnival in the 'Big Lots!' parking lot I find especially frightening.
They look as if a strong enough gust of air could knock them over.
And how exactly do people get on and off them while others are riding?
And what happens if the power goes out for several hours, and you're at the top?

Ah, the ferris wheel...

It's a large wheel with chairs attached.

A motor makes it go around, first lifting your chair, then bringing it down, as it goes in a circle.

The bigger the wheel, the higher you are at the top.

It is best enjoyed with a person you are attracted to.

Kissing at the top of a ferris wheel is a lifelong memory.
