The Sedition Act was an attempt by the United States government to limit freedom of speech during a time of war. This is in conflict with the US Constitution's First Amendment, which states, in part: "Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or the press". Note that there is no "war" exception (or any exceptions whatsoever) to this freedom stated in the text of the amendment. The passing of this act forbade Americans to use "disloyal, profane, scurrilous, or abusive language" about the United States government, flag, or armed forces during war.

I'm assuming you are looking at the Sedition Act of 1798 (there were more, including 1918).

The Sedition Act had 4 parts. The first part made it illegal to combine or conspire together against the government. This part was in direct violation of the First Amendment rights to assembly and to petition the government to redress wrongs.

Part 2 made it a crime to write and publish anti-government writings. Again this violates the First Amendment, this time freedom of the press. It could also be argued that this provision is against the spirit of the Bill of Rights, which establishes protections for the individual from government infringement. But this may be too complicated for the 3-4 sentences you're looking for.

Thomas Jefferson ordered most sedition acts unconstitutional in 1802 because they interfered with freedom of speech as guaranteed by the Bill of Rights.

An exception is the "Alien Enemies Act," which is still in force today.

The Sedition Act basically nullified the first amendment by forbidding free speech and press. People who spoke out against the war or the draft were imprisoned.
