As far as Cuba is concerned, you need to buy a tourist visa allowing 30 days, with the possibility of a 30-day extension.

As far as the US is concerned, you need to get a license from OFAC.

Many thousands of US citizens travel (illegally) via third countries, with no problems.

as far as I know, American citizens are not allowed to visit Cuba at all

You're not. Thank you US embargo! Maybe after the new administration takes over we'll see some changes (according to Obama) but for now travel to Cuba is not allowed. I know that people do it through other countries (ie. fly to mexico and then fly to cuba) but this is illegal. Good luck.
