They didn't make it difficult. They made it so that the office of POTUS would not be a popularity contest. Their intent was to create a checks & balances system where one branch would balance the other. Unfortunately they did not possess the ability to see into the future and see how corrupt all 3 branches are at any given moment.

Its not design to be difficult to impeach a president in a democratic government. But the constitution is design not to make it very very easy to impeach a president without a reason or weak reason.
If it was very easy to impeach a president, and he/she is to make very difficult decision that may prove unpopular how can he/she do so if before in can come to fruitition. He/she is already removed.
Why is it difficult to remove a terrible leader from power. Its not because of the rule of an organization or group. Its because being a abusive ruler or a ruler as a whole will also have friends that are in key positions and power. Which he / she can get support from.
So as not to get too political, for instance in a corporation. We know the corporation is not under one owner but many. And it is the rule of the corporation to protect the wealth / investment of the owner. Let's say a manager, he/she did earn his/her position being diplomatic and being with the company a long time. Most of the other managers will probably be his/her long time colleagues and friends. Probably even other more senior managers. He/she will not easily be terminated for a few failures for who he knows, compared to a newly joined manager that does not know anyone that probably even with a great skill ability and talent. One unpopular decision that the other manager doesn't like or one wrong performance will get him terminated.
Same goes for a president. Someone with few powerful connections may be easily impeached than someone with many key connections.

The impeachment process is the same for any government official. It is the conviction portion, and not the actual impeachment (which is just an indictment by the House of Representatives) which is difficult, and it was done so so that it would require true malfeasance, and not just political whims, that would rule whether an official had done something egregious enough to be removed from office.
Were impeachment and conviction easier, then we would see it all the time where Congress can thwart the will of the voters who put the President in office by simply impeaching him and removing him if (s)he didn't do what they liked, for instance vetoing a bill.

They probably didn't want them to worry about popularity. They wanted them to worry about their job.
