Sea water is hypertonic compared to the body's fluids. Sodium ion is the predominant ion in salt water. Sodium and Potassium are probably the two most important ions in the body. Consuming too much sodium causes sodium and potassium concentrations to shift the wrong directions across the cell membranes in the body (electrolyte imbalance). This results in cells no longer being able to perform tasks that keep them alive. You end up dying.
