i have an australian drivers license and am going to hawaii for a holiday and would like to know what to do in terms of legally driving in the states

All you really have to do is rent a car and have appropriate insurance. Since your Australian license is already in English, an International License won't do much. Check with whichever rental company you will use for more detail (age restriction, etc.).

triple A or AAA offers international drivers license for about $10. (you need 2 passport size photos too)
get one of those, you can't go wrong.
