Come on... mothers breastfeed in public and it is deemed offensive, Janet Jackson's breast is shown for a mere second on adult footbal entertainment and it is an outrage, same-sex marriage is not allowed in 49 states, people get all touchy about condoms distributed in schools, a sex scene is discovered in an adult rated game (San Andreas) and causes a political stir...

What the hell is up with all this?

I agree with you. I think Americans in general are very uptight about sexuality and sexual diversity. I think it's because, in part, that so much of our young history is so wrapped up in religious influences that tend to be historically repressed and very conservative.

But we're a young country, we're growing up,and things are slowly changing. Hopefully we'll get over our childishness, begin treating sex as the small part of life that it really is (instead of treating it like THE most important thing) and, as a result, begin to see sex and sexuality with new eyes.

One can hope.

It's not healthy to suppress sexuality. I agree with you, America is more sexually repressed than Europe, Canada, Australia, and maybe some Asian countries. I read somewhere that "In America, sex is an obsession, and in Europe, it is a fact." Of course there's still some sex in the media, but that is not the same as the way other countries embrace sexuality. Many Americans feel repressed in their daily lives, which is why they get obsessed with porn or whatever (not that there's something wrong with porn). The biggest sexual taboos in America are homosexuality and premarital sex. That is obvious due to the majority of Americans being christians. It is the christian conservatives who are constantly complaining about porn, abortion, sex ed, gays, etc. And if it were up to the religious zealots, the US would be a theocracy like Iran where sexuality is obviously extremely repressed. The religious zealots need to get out of other people's lives.

I've noticed that other countries keep sexual content, and leave out the violence.

For example, the French commercial for Resident Evil 4 shows a mother breastfeeding her baby completely naked, sitting on a white silk bed. Nothing bad is shown, but that would never be allowed to be shown on public television (maybe on cable. on HBO. at about midnight.)

The human anatomy is a natural thing that shouldn't be controversial. What the hell is wrong with seeing genitalia, breasts, or buttocks? What's wrong is what they "represent", I guess. Because people's minds automatically jump to sex, and uptight moms might get pissed off with their 5-year-old seeing that on TV (he doesn't even know what sex is!).

I have a question for you: why WAS England so "sexually repressed" 100 years ago? Do you know what England did to one of its most popular writers during the Victorian Era? Did you know that Oscar Wilde was imprisoned for 2 years because he had sex with men?

Because Britain and the rest of Europe left the Victorian period and its sexual repression when Queen Victoria died. America didn't.

1) Young country
2) Religion is deep-seated in founding of country (think: Puritans, who were radical Protestants)

Note that with #2, I'm not saying the US is a Christian nation, but rather that some of the first permanent European establishments were founded by religious groups seeking shelter.

We are the most religious and culturally isolated country in the world. What more can you expect from a nation who believes their way is the only way to deal with anything?

It was all those G-D Puritans! A Catholic country knows how to unsuppress occasionally (e.g. Mardi Gras).
