My laptop never seemed to be this noisy before, but now the fan starts up within a minute of turning the computer on. The fan is at the same level no matter how many programs I run or what I am doing. Any suggestions of how to minimize this noise?

you sure you're not running a program thats taking up a whole bunch of cpu? go to applications -> Utilities -> Activity Monitor. Once I had this dashboard widget that was hogging up cpu, turning on my fan. How warm is the room you are in? You want to put the laptop in a cool place, and give it good airflow, by maybe putting it on 4 erasers, or a cold metal plate.

If it was mine, the first thing I would do is replace the fan. Some times the bearings just go bad. It doesn't have to make a lot of noise to be annoying I know and the first sign of bearing failure is an increase in noise.

Good luck, I hope you can do it yourself. Lap tops, notebooks are a bit pricey when you need a tech...

Get a can of compressed air. With the MAC turned off and the can turned upright (upside down it will spray liquid), hit the fan with a blast of air. Don't use an old can as the pressure will be reduced.

If this doesn't work...the fan may need to be replaced.
