I am getting a lizard and we are thinking about a water dragon or a basilisk or another medium sized lizard. What are the caging requirements and care sheets would be appreciated. WHAT ARE SOME OTHER LIZARDS YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

I like Bearded Dragons and Emerald Swifts Lizards (but they are smaller).

A water dragon is not a good beginner reptile, and is not easy to care for due to large caging requirements and high humidity and water needs. A bearded dragon is a very nice first lizard, but they do have specific requirements--meet these and you'll have a great pet. They need at least a 40 gallon breeder tank, basking log or rock, heat lamp, digital probe thermometer for accurate temp measurements, a UVB reptile bulb, and a variety of insects and a fresh salad daily. The insects need to be cared for and fed well to provide good nutrition. Vitamins and calcium w/D3 is also necessary to dust the insects with. Most experts do NOT recommend crushed walnut bedding or ANY loose substrate due to impaction risk and the fact it holds parasites and bacteria. I highly recommend a bearded dragon for a first lizard. They are super easy to take care of. I have 2! You can start them out in a medium size aquarium with some gournd walnut shells (lizard litter) at the bottom. They require a heat lamp and a UVA-B light to help them absord the nutrients from their food. You need to give them fresh water and for food they eat crickets and veggies (collards, kale, dandilion greens, carrots, bok choy). They are really great lizards. If you get one, make sure you handle it on a daily basis so they get used to you. Hand feed it so it gets to know you and that you are the one giving it food.

Whatever lizard you decide to get, make sure you are ready for the commitment. They do require work. The older of the two I have is going on 5 and he is about 12 inches long.

Hope this info helps you.

Good luck!

I wouldn't recommend any of those lizards to be your first. And I wouldn't say a bearded dragon would be a great first choice either (walnut shells are a terrible substrate, as well as ANY particle substrate).

I would start off with a gecko, perhaps a leopard gecko. They are fairly easy to care for and don't have too many requirements.
