Its the pomposity of religion thats largely responsible for that belief. We are animals, like all the other types of animals - an evolved, separate species.

Humans have two things that set them apart from other animals
religion
awareness/fear of death

also back when humans first started studying animals they saw them as mechanical beings that reacted to the environment and instincts and had no feelings etc.
that is why many people think humans aren't animals, to many think humans are "superior" and "better" then animals. Animals are NOT here for people, they exist for their own reasons and are smart for whats important to their species
birds aren't stupid because they fly into glass
birds don't know what glass is
you cannot expect an animal to know something it hasn't learned.

Because of the ego. Humans have the ability to reason; to think in the abstract, and are not centered only on survival instinct as animals are (we can be altruistic). Biologically, its because humans have the most evolved nervous system and spiritually its because some humans have awareness that transcends physical existence.

Most people actually do recognize that part of them. However, most people would think we are very different sorts of animals. This is both true and misleading. While we have the ability to think and cogitate, we also have stunted evolutionary capabilities. We're also a fairly young species, so we've seen some change over time.

because we think...animals just react. the human (person) is the worse animal (mammal)...meaning, some humans enjoy the pleasure of killing another one...sometimes for no appearent reason. the human (mammal) will go extinct as other species, i.e dinosaurs, and maybe the polar bear...(2012, The Lucifer Project) because as you see, humans don't give a damn about the environment, killing others species along the way, therefore killing themselves in the process.

Maybe they think we don't resemble common animals we see: fur-covered, wet-nosed creatures. I guess they just don't know that the closest relative to a human is a primate...hm. That's a good question!

Well, it is pretty simple. Humans think that they are above all and think that animals are savge but they are not. This is the problem.... :)

Some humans may think we are not animals.
We are our own kind of animal....relatives of the Wild Man of Borneo in our own way.
