Even if you plan to pound it to bits, erase the data first to be sure:

Magnets don't do much to disk drives, unless you find one like the ones they use in scrap yards to pick up cars.

After you run Darik's Boot and Nuke a day or so, not even the NSA can get the data off it. If you still need to work out some aggression, hit it with a hammer until you are tired.

go to a hardware store buy four of the biggest and most powerful magnets you can find .
place the first magnet beneath the hard drive.
place the two remaining magnets on each side of the hard drive.
finally place the last one one top of the hard drive,
turn the unit on have a cup of coffee read the sports page come back you WILL have an empty hard drive.

AS long as you do not do this to anyone elses computer,
and you want to completely erase an old hard drive:
a magnet. Remove the hard drive from the outer computer casing, and run a magnet over it. (even with the outer casing on it, it will erase and become unable to hold any data! )

SIMPLE! (I'd do this somewhere away from the public eye)
1: Put a hole in it
2: Spray one hell of allot of deodorant in it
3: Attain one match
4: Light match
5: Through match through hole
6: Watch the pretty lights!

Put it in the microwave for 3 seconds :) No data can be recovered after that :)

cluster wise = DBAN software will delete format with 0101
