This is really up to YOU.
Some people like to stand on principle, and would go and try to get their money. I can respect that
To others it's just not worth it. I'm one of those "just not worth it" kinda guys. I don't know how far the service station is from your home, but with gas prices these days, you could burn more in gas coming and going to that station, than what the soft drink is worth...*LOL*
Seriously, just use reasonable judgement, and I suggest doing a cost-benefit analysis in situations like this...But by all means, never let a confrontation get out of hand over a few measly bucks.

They don't need all that money ... for $579 the BNP could buy an excellent Red Baron pedal plane from Airflow Collectibles. The following advertising spiel should suit the BNP down to the ground: "Becoming a notorious pilot ace is easy with this pedal plane. Your child can double as the Red Baron as he streaks across the driveway and sidewalk. The vibrant color and realistic decals are a tribute to the real thing. Dress your child up in a scarf and goggles and get some pictures of them as they race around with the propeller spinning. Their little legs will pump away, moving them down the road on the comfortable and durable rubber tires. Smiles adorn the face of your little fighter pilot as the wind blows through their hair. Recommended for ages 2 to 6 years." Maybe they could buy two.

If you still have the receipt then you should try to challenge it.
I just got gyped on my schools printing system. I tried to print my document twice and after I had paid for the pages each time nothing would print. Then the person in charge of that station said that station was broken and they wouldn't refund the $5 I spent on the papers I never got. So now I've contacted and filed a complaint with the manager of the school's printing system.
Sometimes you need to let people know not to screw things up and that you're not going to take their crap.

you waited 3 days to now try to get your money back?? Your chances of succeeding in this venture are very slim to none. The only....ONLY way,..is if there is a chance for them to look over security tapes for that day/time, providing they have it. Otherwise,...as you said...count your losses and pay more attention to your receipts when you get them.

How long does it take you to earn $3.90? How long would it take you to get it back? Maybe it's not worth the time and effort.

Chalk it up as a life lesson. Your time is worth money too. Let it go and learn from it.

You can try to get it back but I doubt you will have any luck. If you had noticed it then you would have had a better chance. Good luck.

If it will make you feel better to get a refund why not do it? It is basically a question of how important is it to you.
