Why does diet dr. pepper really not taste as close to regular dr. pepper as they say?

I asked a question related to diagnosing a problem I had with my automobile. I wanted to arm myself with knowledge before going to a mechanic and risk getting ripped off.
Several folks here told me exactly what the problem was, and how it should be fixed. And I had the mechanic replace the only part that was needed.
