I think so. The Yankess have been re-tooling for a while. Look at the pitchers-Hughes, Joba, Ian Kennedy, among others and Wang did a good job during the year.
I am not a great fan of A-Rod's. Sure, he hits home-runs, and did a decent job during the season, but he is like Dave Winfield in my eyes-not like Reggie, Ruth, Mantle and so many others. I would love to see the Yankees let A-Rod go for a man who can truly hit in the clutch like Mike Lowell, who had a decent postseason and regular season.
The Yankees need a bull pen, but so do most teams. The Indians for years needed one and as a Yank fan now living in Streetsboro, a wee bit south of Cleveland, I have seen how this team has rebounded when Raffy Left and Raffy Right made the difference.
They also need a strong lead-off hitter. Johnny Damon has power, but if he does not recover from this year's injuries, he will not be the speedster he once was. The Yanks have had a line-up of good baserunners as well as hitters, but look what happened when Wedge moved Grady up to lead-off. For years, the Yanks had that.
Look at the Mets - they took their swoon when Reyes started to take his. They did not have their tablesetter on base, and running, and that does make a difference. It did with the Angels-Sox series, as well.
With the Yanks, for years, you had to be careful what you pitched because a slow curve would allow a baserunner to advance and a fast ball was meat for the hungry lion at the plate.
They need a guy like Jorge behind the plate with the young hitters, but Molina did not do a bad back up job at all, and if he is pressed into more action, can hold his own even if he cannot hold Jorge's bat.
Of course, if George does let Joe go, it depends on who comes into the hot seat. I would let Matingly manage and make Joe Girardi, who proved he could handle a young team when he managed Florida, the bench coach, or even vice versa.
I would get rid of Brian Cashman, though. He has not made smart moves--even before Pavano and Wright broke down, this did not look like a good move for either of them.
But, yes, the Yanks, depending on who the 2008 manager is, can get back, if they want to...I do question the hunger some of them have to win it all. They have the rings, they have the money, and they don't seem to respond as they did in the past to George's ultimata.

the future looks bright as long as mr cashman does not hit the panic button and start signing free agents or trading away the young talent. If he leave the team alone, brings back the same players from this past year, another yankee dynasty will be born, remember 1997, the yanks had a bunch of rookies and lost to cleveland in round one, kind of like this year, and remember what happened after that from 1998 to 2003 ?

no doubt about it.....with pitching!!
I just hope that The Boss doesn't make any hasty decisions like he is known for doing...Bad trades, signing washed up free agents, making Don Mattingly Manager..
BEST OF LUCK WITH BOSTON!!!
