I usually try - sometimes people overload me with information about plans for the coming days and weeks, though....mostly my parents.

Yes I do Bex and I think that is the best policy especially when you are trying to deal with something in your life. I haven't always but since my illness I have been much more laid back about things and just enjoy each day as it comes. Someone said at some time or another 'treat each day as if it were your last' and I think that is very good advice!

I try to. Although I do have a tendency to rehash something that happened in the past or anticipate something I don't even know will happen in the future. When I realize I'm doing that, I make a conscious effort to change my thoughts, and live for today.

What do they say? Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, and today is a gift. That's why it is called the present.

Like the previous poster stated, can't change the past and don't know the future.

I do..i learned this way of life from my father. He was a recovering alcoholic. It kept him sober for 43 years. I'm not alcoholic, but the one day at a time thing helps me with the ups and downs of everyday life. Keeps me grounded.

Yes. There isn't very much for me to focus on in the future. At the moment I'm undergoing the same routine over and over again-so what am I do to? Focus on how many times I'll repeat this routine?

Focusing on life day by day really helped me overcome [or begin to overcome] depression, though.

With most things, yes, but I do plan and prepare for my future. I look at the people who haven't and use their mistakes as an example for that. I also see people who wasted time not enjoying the present, and feel they have lived a life of worthlessness. I don't want to be one of them either.

I think taking things one day at a time leads to selfishness.

Focusing too much on the "here and now" disregards consequences that ripple out in a cause-effect relationship. Sure, I can say I want to have a good time today, but if that's going to harm another person several days (or years) down the road, it's ultimately not worth it.

To be well-rounded humans, we should understand the past, embrace the present, and focus on the future.
