since the virus is consistently changing form, it is difficult to actually just "cure" it. and since the cold is not an incredibly deadly illness, and it is treatable using current methods, it is not a hugely important endeavour for researchers to go into. at the moment, the priority is more along the lines of diseases we are still not able to treat and that we do not understand completely.

It's possible, but it's not quite a top priority. I think if anything, it may be one of many viruses that could be "cured" or eradicated through a method of treatment that might apply to many viruses. However, I don't think the pharmaceutical industry is really in the business of finding / making cures anymore, just treatments. What was the last disease, illness, or syndrome to be "cured"?
