You've got something on the soleplate or you've scratched it.
With the iron cold (!) clean it with a nylon kitchen scrubbie and a good all purpose cleaner. Feel for adhesive residue...gets me each time I use a fabric binder or iron on patch. A very fine steel wool will also work......Brillo or SOS pad for example.
If you have a scrach and it's deep, then time for a new iron. Sorry.
Check the ironing board cover......is there something sticky there? Maybe time for a new cover.

If you can see dirt or scorch marks on the iron, place a large old but clean towel on the board. Place a damp green scratch pad on the towel and rub the hot iron over it quickly. Then, iron the towel to get the junk off. Then, lay down a clean old rag and put a piece of wax paper on it. Iron the wax paper with a medium hot iron. (The last step will help the iron not stick and be easier to iron with.)

Clean the bottom of the iron really well with baking soda and a nylon sponge. Then run a warm iron over wax paper.
Should glide real easy.
