Maybe it is just where I am at. I am in a small midwestern town but I feel the working people are going farther down the economic ladder....I mean the ones who have the menial jobs. Then if you go to school it is almost impossible to pay off the debts incurred? Please discuss.

I really do not think it has to do with illegals. My parents raised 5 kids on two "menial" jobs in the sixties. The comment about about a duty to raise yourself above that is not right.
The fact I am saying is you sed to be able to raise a family on a honest hard working living.

I have seen allot of the world in my Navy career...even the poorest of the poor in the US live better than those in other countries.

That being said...I believe that that it is hard to live while earning minimum wage. Heck I make a good living by most standards and have a hard time keeping my head above water. I know the debt of an education....I put both my daughters through college out of pocket and it has hurt.

I have noticed that the gap between the "blue collar" and "white collar" works grow. I think it has allot to do with the "product" the US provides to the real of the world. We used to be an industrial nation and are turning into a more technological nation. When we were mostly industrial, the blue collar worker was high on the economic pole. Now a person who works with his/her hands are in less demand.

Just my thoughts.....

The answer: Politics

Illegal immigrants are taking over the working class to the point that it will someday screw over the USA, and re-create the "Fall of Rome" in modern day.

The Republicans don't want to do anything too harsh about it (although Bush and Romney are on the right track... but it'd be nice if any good thing they've ever done would be approved) because they rely on maintaining these illegals' support to help them win the next ellection.

The Democrats won't do anything about it because they gain considerable support by directly supporting the collapse of the US government into a communist regime, and will exploit the illegals as their tool in their plan.

The Green party won't do anything because Mexicans aren't Americans, so therefore, they must be environmentally friendly. (Ironically, Mexico City is the second-most polluted city in the world, after Beijing)

If Osama staged a coup and somehow took over the US office, he wouldn't do anything about it, but instead grant them free passage inside for helping to destroy his arch enemy.

All in all, we need to build a "Great Wall of Texas" and re-assign the National Guard/Reserves to patrol the border better, and also enact more laws against companies like McDonalds that knowingly hire these people in spite of the fact that it's against the law.

United States for the LEGAL United States Americans!

As a last resort, we could hire the Germans to stage a genocide against illegal aliens... just a thought... and they'd probably do it too.

there is no question that the buying clout of the middle class is declining.

and this emperils the economy of the entire world.

if the american consumer stops buying the economic production of the usa, china and india and other places the depression that will follow will be like nothing we've ever seen before.

this is why cutting taxes to the middle class makes so much more sense than cutting taxes for the wealthy.

if the wealthy get more money, they will probably put it into stocks or investments.

if middle class people get more money, they will use it to buy the things they need NOW, thereby putting the money directly into the economy.

We have it great! One thing that I can't help but notice is that we want more and more, bigger and bigger.. and aren't happy with the standard of living our parents had. They usually had one tv, a raised ranch that had 8 foot ceilings, and a two car garage.. ( no 10-12 foor ceilings and 3 car garages to waste utility bills on) and didn't have to buy their kids ipods, game cubes and so on... We should try to live more modestly with what we have, and our quality of life would be greater!

No you are correct. The working class is being displaced by illegal aliens. They do jobs for half or a quarter of what an American would do it for, so salaries in unskilled areas are decreasing. Very sad.

We have two political parties who represent the rich and the corporations. And no parties who represent the working people in America. And a media who wants America to fail. We are in serious trouble.

Menial jobs are for the entry level worker. It is your responsibility to yourself, your family and the next generation of workers to move up and out of these jobs. Do better for yourself...don't expect menial jobs to do better for you.

you have some good points...

and I'm not so sure it's "declining" as much as it isn't increasing at the rate of inflation/increasing costs... which is "declining" in a way...

and also it's not even close to increasing at the rates that the very wealthy increases... yet little seems to be trickling down...
