I highly recommend "House of Leaves" by Mark Z. Danielewski. It has a cult following, and my friends talk about how they're now afraid to go to sleep at night!

His sister (singer POE) made a fantastic concept album based on the book called "Haunted."

From what I've heard, IT is about as scary as it gets. Yes, the book.
Someone told me Salem's Lot was terrifying, but I read it, and it didn't bother me in the least.

But I'd try Stephen King, really. I saw the movie 1408... X_X Homigawd... I'm totally out to read the book. He's got a new one out too. Cell. Look it up.

Happy reading <3

The Amityville Horror and Pet Semetary did it for me. Most of Stephen King's works are good for making sleep with the overhead light on for a night or two but those two scared me to death. I still (30 years later) get the shivers if I see red lights in a window.

Hmmm, I don't know if you'll consider it really scary, but it did scare me when I read it a few years ago:
"The Vanished" by: Celia Rees
You might also try:
"Jade Green: A Ghost Story" by: Phyllis Reynolds Naylor
Again not really sure if you'd consider it scary, but it was a little freaky when I read it......then again I was ten or eleven at the time.........

This book isn't like.. SCARY scary. It's called 'The Bell Jar' by Sylvia Plath. It's supposed to be really depressing. It talks about how this girl named Esther is going insane and how she wants to committ suicide or something.
