The contiguous states are the ones having a border (or borders) that touch other states' borders. The root of contiguous is the same as contagious: Touching.
If a state is outside the contiguous United States, then it's borders do NOT touch another state's borders. That leaves Alaska and Hawaii!

Contiguous just means touching.
In the USA, almost all the states are touching each other - these are known as the Lower 48. There are however two states which don't touch the rest. These are Alaska, which is separated from the rest of the states by Canada, and Hawaii, which is a series of islands in the Pacific Ocean.

The contiguous states are also known as the lower 48, or every state except Alaska and Hawaii.
Hence the definition of Contiguous:
–adjective 1. touching; in contact.
2. in close proximity without actually touching; near.
3. adjacent in time: contiguous events.
