I think there are more letters in the word "little" because it takes more letters to write out the sounds that the word is made up of. That's it.

I think that when the person was "making up the words" they found it easier to ba i ga and spell big than going the long way and little is la i tal so there really is no other way to spell it!!!

For that matter, why is "abbreviation" such along word?
Why do we say a short story is 5000 words long instead of 5000 words short?
And why is "short" longer than "long"?
And why won't Paris Hilton return my love letters???!?!?!?

Little requires a closer look and the closer you look the more complicated, hence the more knowledge we gain. So, little deserves more letters, don't ya think?.
