I think there are more letters in the word "little" because it takes more letters to write out the sounds that the word is made up of. That's it.

I think that when the person was "making up the words" they found it easier to ba i ga and spell big than going the long way and little is la i tal so there really is no other way to spell it!!!

For that matter, why is "abbreviation" such along word?
Why do we say a short story is 5000 words long instead of 5000 words short?
And why is "short" longer than "long"?

They didn't want to belittle the word little more than they had to big can be defined as enormous huge catastrophic etc.

But the words LARGE and SMALL have the same amount of letters, that means if you say LITTLE is means BIG and if you say BIG it means LITTLE and if you say SMALL OR LARGE it means equal

Little requires a closer look and the closer you look the more complicated,hence the more knowledge we gain. So, little deserves more letters,don't ya think?.

But the pronounciation of the word little is not as impactful as the word BIG....
