Like EVERYTHING! XD The animation kicks america's butt and the storylines and character backgrounds make WAY more sense. Plus, anime is way more mature than cartoons and just more interesting altogether.

Anime and cartoons are basically the same - both are animations. But there are differences:

Anime
1. Has a wide range of stories.
2. More complex. Some have happy ending, some have sad ones, heroes don't always win, dragged fights... it's more realistic.
3. Pretty art most of the time.
4. Some are targeted to certain age range; like matured ones, teens only, suitable for all.....
5. Good SFX. Some have better. CG, 3-D, sparkles...
6. Theme songs. They are fun to listen to, and gives life to it.
7. High in budget? Maybe.
8. Japanese language usage makes people want to learn Japanese.
9. Some anime even have educational facts and points, so we can learn new things everyday.
10. Bishounen (good-looking guys) and bishoujo (good-looking girls) are what people are mostly into. :P

Cartoons:
1. Has a limited range of stories.
2. Not really that complex. Happy ending, heroes win in the end, no dragged fights... you know what I mean.
3. The art are so-so (for me, but maybe this is the influence of anime).
4. Since it was intended for children and teens, no wonder the stories are limited. Do we have a cartoon specially made for adults?
5. Although some have good SFX, but compared to anime, it was.... meh.
6. I want to know if cartoons do have their own soundtracks.
7. Budget maybe the same.... or lower.
8. English is commonly used.... people who don't speak English will be able to learn it. Most English-speaking viewers can understand what they're talking about even without watching it, just by listening.
9. Although they put lesson stuffs, it doesn't change the fact that cartoons are just for fun. Except for Avatar.
10. For some anime-like cartoons, they have good-looking guys. But most people go to "matured" people here. You know, like Superman, Batman....

This is my opinion.

It can be anything, there are always people who say "anime is dumb, why do you watch that, grow up". The truth is that if they watched some themselves they would love it too, the reason is it is everything you can find a show about any specific topic or there are some that mixes them together. I don't just watch anime I watch everything, but I have had a problem with a lot of American entertainment being flat and uninteresting. That is one thing you cant say about anime it is high energy, some are slower than others but those are the ones you have to follow while it pulls you into the story. My parents were middle-aged and by all standards old-school, but they watched a couple with me and they both found some they liked. It all boils down to this anime is something you wont feel as it wasted your time, yes there are some that is bad like Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z but even those have avid following which if not watching that would watch Elmo(Pokemon) and Jackass(DBZ) and that is good that they don't watch the alternatives.

Anime and cartoon are the same thing. Ask a Japaneese and they will say that Superman cartoon is an anime.

Japan's animations have a wider range of age so the stories are much complicated and varied. The artworks are more complex and each animator have different styles of drawing so there are more variation.

American's animations are usually targeted for kids to teens so the story is not that heavy and the artwork is made simple and colorfull for kids to enjoy.

There are many reasons to this, firstly anime drawings are much more complex. And many people find this attractive.
Most of the cartoons are designed fro little kids viewing, but anime isn't made just for kids, many anime shows are directed at teens and adults.
Many anime plots are also very complexed and attract a lot of interest. There also tends to be many genres in one anime show which satisfies peoples needs. Take naruto for example, it is a action, drama, comedy and romance based show. So it is bound to attract attention.

Hopefully, my explanation helped
Have Fun

Variety. There's a different type of anime for everyone. Cartoons (besides the recent kick@ss toons like Simpsons, Futurama, South Park, Family Guy..etc.) are usually aimed at kids. Until the anime influence hit they kind of seemed repetitive and nothing that happened influenced the overall cartoon because nothing ever changed.

anime is a true art form for displaying any kind of emotion or idea. u can convey any idea in an anime, in any style.there is comedy, romance, action, suspense, thriller, etc. there is hardly any other art form out there capable of dragging u in to its story and making u a devoted fan becuz it relates to u in a way like nothing else can. it can keep u engaged in suspense, shriek in horror, laugh till u fall over, or simply cheer on your favorite hero while the villain is taken down a peg or two. simply it is the most gripping mix of sound and visuals that also makes u think and feel deeply.

one thing is that anime is much more complex in many things and alot more realistic. the drawing of the characters, vehicles, backgrounds were all drawn with detail, on anime you will see more texture, detail, and colors than cartoons. in cartoons, a character's vest might be of plain black with no variants, in anime the character could have pitch black, plain black, even dark gray and more in just one layer of clothing. detail, anime has plenty of details, from bodies filled with guts, stomach, heart, w/e, in cartoons they MIGHT just show a complete body filled on top of blood, in anime you see guts and an evicirated body. there are ALOT of things i havent mentioned for anime, but basically cartoons is a weaker friendlier form of anime(thats y kids watch it!)

Well, anime is just one type of cartoon. Usually, anime is written for a more mature audience. It has better writing, more complex stories that span several episodes, and no one gets an anvil on their head.

Anime can approach themes that teenagers and young adults like a lot more easily than U.S. cartoons can.

With anime, you can have graphic violence (and death), superior action, sex appeal, horror, etc.

Watch something like G.I. Joes for example, and you will never see elements like torture, violent oppression, or death of the truely innocent. I can name plenty of anime where this kind of thing occurs, and because of it, you feel deeper feelings of sadness, anger, and joy when the villians are eventually thwarted.
