Bowie wrote this after seeing the 1968 Stanley Kubrick movie 2001: A Space Odyssey. "Space Oddity" is a play on "Space Odyssey."

At the time space travel was in its infancy and still very captivating to most people.

Oddity Meaning

Major Tom, a fictional astronaut who becomes lost in outer space. Supposedly released to coincide with the Apollo 11 moon landing...........

Space Oddity can be interpreted as a "bad trip". At the start of the song Major Tom takes pills ("take your protein pills and put your helmet on"), those pills have their effect ("and I'm floating in a most peculiar way / and the stars look very different today") but eventually Major Tom fails to come out of his trip. This has been likened to heroin use, and this interpretation is supported by the Ashes to Ashes lyrics, "We know Major Tom's a junkie/Strung out in heavens high," as "junkie" is a slang term for a heroin addict

I do remember he rushed its release to coincide with the moon landing in 1969, and recorded other songs like "Star Man", a very melancholy song about an alien.

That's about all I can provide.

It's comparing an astronaut to a man on drugs, he did a follow up song Ashes To Ashes that had the line "We know Major Tom's a junkie"

i don't really know why he sang it but i would like to point out that David Bowie was a very eccentric man who at one point in his life believed himself to be an alien and is also best friends with the man who partially blinded him. no offense meant however, i personally believe david bowie is one of the greatest people to walk this planet.
