The only time I can think where this might be relevant is that streams where they lay are often in forests. Cutting too close to the stream can pollute it with debris or increase the temperature by removing shade. That could cause the loss of suitable habitat.

Anyways, the question was, WHY are salmon a forest creature. Not ARE they a forest creature.

At times in their lives, like just after hatching and when spawning. The rest of the time they are river or ocean creatures.
