It grows in volume by accumulating protoplasmic substances. And this happens by the usual process of intake of food, digestion, assimilation, and then by manufacture of molecules by the cell. This potentates division which may or may not occur.

It takes nutrients from the environment, uses them in metabolic reactions to generate energy and synthesize new molecules to grow larger. Finally it either dies or divides into two new smaller cells.
