To answer the actual question posed, if I HAD to name a child after a place, I'd most likely use Avalon -- both for some great summer holidays with my husband and after King Arthur's mythological paradise. ;) Bit of a two-fer, I suppose.
That said, there are plenty of "place names" that are really named for people, rather than vice versa. I believe a few have already been mentioned: Carolina, Georgia, Virginia, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Aurora, etc. I certainly don't care for the random place name trend -- plucking Savannah, London or Boston off the map and calling it a name -- but the many names that existed long before the town, state, etc. in question definitely don't fall into that same category. ;)

Ahlen, Berlin, Menden, Rhine, Edenkoben (Eden)...
These are all German cities. I traveled to Germany two years ago now and can't wait to get back there. My heritage is German and my last name is German, so when I eventually lose my last name to my husband a german first name would be great to preserve the heritage. My other favorite place is Disneyworld and I cant really name a child Orlando...oh wait people do that.

I would go with Cali short for California because well I live in California and have always loved this place and always think of sunny days when I hear it!! Having a sunny name would make any day better!! I like Conway for a boy because when I was little I lived near Conway in Wales! It has a wonderful castle and is a nice quiet town!!

Girls: Carolina or Charlotte
Boys: Raleigh or Wilson
Why? Because all of these places in North Carolina have significant meaning to me. And, the fact that I am obsessed with the State itself is an added bonus :) Actually, Wilson is also my grandfather's middle name, so it would work rather well :)

For a girl, I'd choose Ireland, Paris, Georgia, Odessa, Delphi, Victoria, Virginia, Regina, Miami, Florence, Asia, China and my top favorite names would be Milan, probably altered to Milana or Berlin, altered to be spelled as Berlinn. All of these sound like feminine appropriate names to me and they are also places I love!
For a boy, I'd choose Dakota, Montana, Indiana, Vermont,
Nevada, Reno, Maine, and my top fav name would have to be Santorini. These are all places I love too. I couldn't use any name that didn't represent a great place!

I wouldn't. Naming kids after places is horribly tacky.
I'd only consider place-names that were names first, like Carolina, Georgia,Virginia, etc.

There is a small town a few miles out of Florence called 'Sienna', a name I like.
I am also toying with the idea of naming our child Sian (if its a girl) because she(?) was conceived in Xian, China.
