Print off some flyers, or get stickers or buttons made (these will be more successful than flyers, if you can spare the cash), go to a local show that you know will be somewhat heavily attended, wait outside at the end of the show and hand people whatever you made.
MOST IMPORTANTLY-- don't just stand there idly and hope somebody'll come ask you! go to THEM. practically force them to take a sticker or flyer or button or whatever!

If you live in an area where bands play with any amount of frequency contact the venue and see if they can get you in contact with the booking agent. If you open local shows that will generate you a lot of interest. If you do get booked at gigs, make sure you update every place you can about it, myspace, purevolume, and last.fm (a very valuable tool indeed). And, even if you can't play the shows, make sure you guys show up anyway; hand out stickers or flyers with your information on them. If your school hosts any talent nights be sure to sign up for those.

Sell add space on your web site (for cheap like $20) and give the money to charity (That makes people want to do it). Require that the advertisers put up promotional flyers in thier establishments for your band.
The main thing is to get creative in getting your name out. The more that people know your name, the more likely they are to book your band for a gig.
Don't think you will be famous over night either. Do the small local work. If you have what it takes to make it, you will get bigger.

Get some of your friends to request your band at a local concert hall and set up a merch stand while your there, pass out some stuff for free like stickers with info on the back or pics of the band, maybe even demos if you can afford it, anything to spread the word.

get a myspace for it and then go to yahoo answers and say something like, hey do you think my band is good or something like that. but don't forget to leave the web address... that would be really dumb

umm make posters and put them around your town or state and make friends with people in other states and have them put up poster too..send them the posters to put out around there town
