The United States is the only "western" country to have it's drinking age at 21 and one of the only ones in the world that has an age limit that high. It's pretty absured that at age 16 people are treated as adults under penalty of law, then when they are 18 can be drafted but still cannot drink. When I go to Quebec in a few months, I am gonna go to bars and party but when I come back to the U.S. I'd be doing something bad. It's a mess.

You all need to stop because you cannot make the argument that 18 year olds are not mature or responsible enough to drink and have me take you seriously. You can't say that without also saying that 18 year olds also should not be able to serve in the military.

The current trend is for drinking ages to go up, not down. Apparently the UK is looking at raising the age to 21.

That being said, it will never come down until the youth of America learn to be responsible. Alcohol related vehicle accidents is a leading killer of 16 - 20 year olds. Why would we want to make alcohol EASIER to obtain by a group that has demonstrated such irresponsibility?

The drinking age will probably stay at 21 for the foreseeable future. There is not a lot of push to lower it. Part of the problem is that by the time 18 year olds get anything going they are already almost 21. Stay in Canada until you are 21. By the way, there is no draft in the U.S.

In the 80's the drinking age was 18 but Congress changed it to 21. I dont beleive that the drinking age will ever go back to 18 yrs. MADD and other organizations will see to it that will never happen. There has been many studies shown that teenagers cannot handle licquor. There has been many alcohol related deaths among high school seniors.

Yeah- well, the problem HERE is, that way too many 18 year old drivers- drink themselves into semi-conciousness on the "sly" & then THINK they are fit to drive themselves to the next Bar... The next thing you KNOW- they're wrapped around an SUV with 3 or 4 dead kids in it- & NOBODY is suggesting the drinking age should be lowerd anymore... So DON'T count on it happening any time soon...

The simple answer... no.

Not enough 18 year olds vote to get politicians attention, and there are numerous lobbyists out there with financial backing that oppose it, such as MADD, and insurance companies.

Also, recent medical studies show the brain continues to mature past the teen years. Studies show alcohol has a more adverse effect on a brain that is still developing.

In the Uk they start at 12 or 13 of course their parents deny this.At 14 they go into Pubs and clubs with fake ID cards available on the net for £10.The Police dont seem to mind cos at least they know where to find them all.Take a cruise from the Uk and its ok for 18yr olds to drink if they are british but if they are from the US they cannot drink.Crazy if you ask me.

I hope so! It is ridiculous that the age is so high.
Someone told me that in Houston, TX a person can drink if they are 18 and accompanied with their parents. Both persons must show their I.D. and the parent must remain at the table at all times.
