the new 2008 rmz 450 has 5 gears in it. This is an upgrade from last years 4 speed tranny.
The 450 in 2007 had 4 gears, but through R&D, they felt that they needed 5......

Two stroke engines have a MUCH narrower power band than a four stroke so you need more gears to keep it in the power. The bigger the engine the less gears you'll need also. My CR125 had 6 gears and my YZ490 had 4. The 125 was faster in a top end run but the 490 ate it at all other times.

The 450 has so much low end torque and massive power throughout it's power range, it could do the same work with just a 4 speed trani.
Honda and Yamaha open class bikes used 4 speeds at one time.
They didn't last long - either they were immediately discontinued or upgraded to a 5 speed.
