Believe it or not, Football for Dummies is a good book for what you want to achieve. Worked well for my girlfriend. Now she understands it and somewhat tolerates my annual 4-month devotion to it!

Find a book that goes into details. There might be a football for dummies book. Learn the rules first, then watch the games. Ask people if you don't understand why they are doing certain stuff.

I don't think you can learn about football "fast." You can learn the basics by just watching the games. Then ask questions when you don't understand something. I learned rules through watching many games. I learned about the teams through fantasy football.

Bring a friend who knows football, watch the games with him, and have him explain it as the game progresses. Also listen to the commentary if you need to.
