The egg is only fertilizable for about 24 hours after ovulation. Somewhere around 12-16 days later, it's then disposed of in your period. This time period between ovulation and your period is called your luteal phase. Anything less than 10 days is called a luteal phase defect and it's very hard to conceive without meds to prolong this period, because the egg can fertilize, but it wont implant properly in less than 10 days.

It stays alive/fertile for 12-36 hours, then it dies if not fertalized by a sperm. Once dead it is released with the uterine lining at the time of your period.
